Cultural Anthropology Monday

When did middle class Canadian parents decide to call all their male children under 10 "buddy"? When I was a lad, it was just bus drivers who did that. Now it's soccer mums/moms.[1]

[1] As a child, I was told Canadians spelled "mum" the English way, but I can't say I see any evidence of this in the current culture. Did this change too?
